| Judi Tal,
a native Israeli who grew up in the United States, is best known for the
exquisite interpretations of Hebrew, Yiddish and Ladino songs she has performed
before thousands of Washington area audiences over the past three decades.
Funny, strong and down-to-earth, Judi has established herself as an exceptional
communicator of ideas and feelings. Intertwining melodies with brightly
hued threads of legend, myth, history and her own observations, Judi doesn’t
shy away from singing about or commenting on any aspect of the human condition.
Her recordings include Path Across the Sky, a compilation of original melodies,
blessings and prayers. Judi is a cantorial candidate at the Maalot Seminary
in Rockville.
Traditionally a singer of other people's songs, Dr. Andrea Foster
now has a few of her own, and will share two of them this afternoon. Andrea
came to the D.C. area in 1984 to complete a Ph.D. program in American
Studies at George Washington University. By the mid 1990s, having completed
the program, Foster taught History at Montgomery College and attended
David Shneyer's Am Kolel services. Those services brought Foster back
to her original love of Judaism, music, and singing. As a result, she
switched gears, or careers, picked up her guitar after 25 years and began
singing with preschool synagogue programs, religious schools, and cantorial
related activities. She is now a Maalot Seminary student.
Terry Horowit came to Maryland from St. Louis, 16 years
ago, by way of a biology doctoral program at Brown University. A tutor
of B’nei Mitzvah at Har Shalom Congregation for the last 5 years,
she also teaches numerous classes to adults in various trop systems as
well as courses on aspects of Jewish practices. Terry organizes and leads
both adult and children’s services at various area synagogues and
facilities. A writer and performer of original Jewish and folk music,
she also composes original melodies for prayers and texts from the liturgy.
She will be performing one of her songs and one of her arrangements of
a verse from Isaiah for you today. Terry recently completed her studies
in the Cantorial certification program from the Maalot Seminary.
