Wild and Authentic Modern Klezmer Music
featuring David Julian Gray, Wendy Morrison and Richard Seidel

Klezcentricity, formed in 1999 by seminal klezmer revivalist David Jullian Gray, is emerging as one of the most exciting and creative klezmer ensembles working today. David began his career as a founding member of The Klezmorim, whose recordings and concerts in the 1970s and ‘80s ignited the international revival of klezmer, the dance band music of Eastern European Jewry. Joining with David are Wendy Morrison on accordion and Richard Seidel on string bass. Together they explore new direction within klezmer’s traditional structures and musical vocabulary.

Zemer Chai, whose name means "living song", is a volunteer choral arts society dedicated to sharing the rich cultural heritage of the Jewish people through its poetry and music. Since 1976, the choir has performed for many area synagogues and numerous local events for both the Jewish community and the wider community. Zemer Chai has appeared at the Kennedy Center, The Smithsonian Institution, as well as concert halls in Boston and New York. In addition, the chorus has made three trips to Israel, singing throughout the country as part of the Zimriya, Israel's International Choral Festival. Zemer Chai is also an integral part of the wider Jewish choral movement in America, performing with the National Jewish Chorale at Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall, and singing at the North American Jewish Choral Festival in Ellenville, New York.

Zemer Chai sings the full range of the Jewish choral repertoire. This includes folk music from all over the world, as well as classical music from the Renaissance through to this century. In 1994, the choir was privileged to add to this repertoire with the commission of "Zimrei Chayim" ("Songs of Life"), a suite of three Jewish folksongs arranged by noted composer Alice Parker.

Zemer Chai is a completely independent choir of approximately 30 singers. The singers come from all walks of Jewish life and find common ground in their love of the music and their commitment to high quality performance. Membership is by audition.

Judi Tal, a native Israeli who grew up in the United States, is best known for the exquisite interpretations of Hebrew, Yiddish and Ladino songs she has performed before thousands of Washington area audiences over the past three decades. Funny, strong and down-to-earth, Judi has established herself as an exceptional communicator of ideas and feelings. Intertwining melodies with brightly hued threads of legend, myth, history and her own observations, Judi doesn’t shy away from singing about or commenting on any aspect of the human condition. Her recordings include Path Across the Sky, a compilation of original melodies, blessings and prayers. Judi is a cantorial candidate at the Maalot Seminary in Rockville.

Traditionally a singer of other people's songs, Dr. Andrea Foster now has a few of her own, and will share two of them this afternoon. Andrea came to the D.C. area in 1984 to complete a Ph.D. program in American Studies at George Washington University. By the mid 1990s, having completed the program, Foster taught History at Montgomery College and attended David Shneyer's Am Kolel services. Those services brought Foster back to her original love of Judaism, music, and singing. As a result, she switched gears, or careers, picked up her guitar after 25 years and began singing with preschool synagogue programs, religious schools, and cantorial related activities. She is now a Maalot Seminary student.

Terry Horowit came to Maryland from St. Louis, 16 years ago, by way of a biology doctoral program at Brown University. A tutor of B’nei Mitzvah at Har Shalom Congregation for the last 5 years, she also teaches numerous classes to adults in various trop systems as well as courses on aspects of Jewish practices. Terry organizes and leads both adult and children’s services at various area synagogues and facilities. A writer and performer of original Jewish and folk music, she also composes original melodies for prayers and texts from the liturgy. She will be performing one of her songs and one of her arrangements of a verse from Isaiah for you today. Terry recently completed her studies in the Cantorial certification program from the Maalot Seminary.
