The Award-winning producer/director, Aviva Kempner will present an 18-minute work in progress of her latest film, Gertrude Berg: America’s Molly Goldberg, a documentary on America’s favorite radio and TV personality of a bygone era. One of the most successful entertainment ventures ever, The Goldbergs was a radio and television show that reached across every medium. And it all hinged on one woman - Gertrude Berg, a true multi-media maven. Gertrude Berg was Molly!

This workshop will be a hands-on session where participants will learn the basics of this unique and ancient embroidery technique. The workshop will cover history of the Yemenite Jewish people, their embroidery stitches and the meaning of symbols. The workshop will be held in the studio of Shirley Waxman.

This workshop will explore the Jewish identity issues and Jewish imagery in Marge Piercy's book, He She and It. This novel is a futuristic work of fiction by one of America's most well loved radical Jewish feminist authors. It is rare to find Jewish culture and traditions central in the works of science fiction, yet Marge Piercy does exactly that in this fascinating work. It is not necessary to have read the book to enjoy this workshop

Then come to this workshop to learn lots of traditional and contemporary rounds that’ll keep alive – or perhaps start – a family tradition of singing together as you drive around town. No kids? No car? If you like to sing, come anyway! This promises to be a fun evening for parents, choir members, and YOU! Song sheets provided. Tape recorders/CD recorders welcome!

Carol Boyd Leon is a professional musician who specializes in sharing the joy of music with everyone she meets. Both children and adults appreciate her gentle but energetic style of teaching and songleading. Her clear, loving voice invites everyone to sing with her. Carol is a songwriter as well as being a songleader/music educator for several congregations and schools in the Washington area. She has three albums; Her latest, Gan Shirim, has been nominated “Best Jewish Album” by Just Plain Folks.

About Shirley Waxman
Shirley Waxman is a fiber artist who works with contemporary Judaica and objects for life cycle events.. Her Judaic collection includes pieced and painted challah covers, wall hangings, kippot (skull caps), tallitot (prayer shawls), chuppot (marriage canopies) and Torah mantles.

Her work has been selected for many shows including in the National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia PA; “Fabrics of Faith: Contemporary Liturgical Textiles,” at the Washington National Cathedral; the Goldman Gallery of Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington and the Baltimore Jewish Community Center. Her commissioned pieces include eight Torah mantles for Ohr Kodesh Congregation; a chuppah/wall hanging for Temple Beth Ami; Torah mantle, parochet and reader's table covering for Gesher Day School; six Torah mantles and an Ark Cover for Temple Sinai; a chuppah/memorial quilt/wall hanging for Farbrangen; a nine-foot wall hanging, Temple Solel, Phoenix AZ.

Her undergraduate thesis in Philosophy and Religion dealt with ethical dilemmas in Marge Piercy’s He, She, and It.
